The Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center (BVAMC) is an integral part of the Medical community that provides acute, tertiary, medical, and surgical care to Veterans of Alabama. Background and-or Security Investigation required DUTIES:
Duties: This position is located in the Birmingham VA Medical Center Radiology Department CT Section located in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. This Technologist independently performs computed tomography examination procedures. This Technologist will perform computerized tomography of the head, neck, spine, chest and body. These examinations are performed with and with! out the use of contrast materials. The purpose of these examinations is! to achieve diagnostic studies to bring about proper diagnosis and treatment. This Technologist will discuss any case that deviates from normal protocol set by the Radiologist. This person will assist Radiologists in biopsies examinations. This person will prepare and administer contrast materials under the direction of the Radiologist for the purpose of performing exams requiring injectable solutions such as CT scan examinations and for the purpose of performing oral and rectal examinations of the GI tract. With training and under supervision of the Radiologist, this person will establish IV access and administer IV contrast. This Technologist will observe patient for signs and symptoms of adverse contrast reaction and initiate the appropriate response for varying levels of severity. This person will prepare contrast materials for all CT procedures. In the case of injected media, a patient consent form must be obtained by the Technologist. These procedures require the use ! of needles, syringes, injectors, non-ionic contrast media, barium, enema bags and drinking cups. This Technologist will be responsible to the Radiologists and Supervisor for the quality and quantity of radiographic examinations performed in order to ensure a high level of acceptability of radiographs while minimizing patient dosage and reducing costs. This Technologist must have recent experience as a CT Technologist performing all duties that is required of a CT Technologist. Training in the CT area while a student is not considered experience as a CT Technologist.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States.
Education/Experience: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technolog! y program, evidenced by a Certificate or an AssociateÂ's degree, accred! ited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), and a certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in radiology.
Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT).
Physical Requirements: Must be medically cleared by the VHA Employee Health Unit (EHU) physician prior to entry on duty. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
English Language Proficiency: Applicants appointed to Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with Chapter 2, Section D, and paragraph 5a of VHA Handbook 5005.
Grade Determination:
In addition to meeting the above Basic Requirements, applicants must meet the following additional requirements to qualify for this position at the GS-09 Grade Level:
GS-09: Ex! perience - Completion of one (1) full year (52 weeks) of experience, at the next lower grade level (GS-08) directly related to the position being filled. CERTIFICATION IN COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT) BY THE AMERICAL REGISTRY OF RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY (ARRT) IS REQUIRED .
All candidates must demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's) listed below:
1. Knowledge and skill related to CT studies, processes and equipment.
2. Knowledge of human anatomy.
3. Knowledge of the patient's clinical record, diagnosis and lab results.
4. Ability to monitor patient's physiological changes during CT procedures and keep the Radiologist informed.
5. Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
6. Knowledgeable in administering contrast.
7. Ability to work independently and prioritize work.

COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT)- This specialty modality requires specific knowledge of cross sectional human anatomy and its application in spiral, and/or, multi-slice computer tomography, inclusive of 3-D reconstruction scans, including drainages, biopsies, and peripheral vascular examinations. The Technologist requires specific knowledge and training in the location, appearance, and function of the various major and minor systems susceptible to radiological illumination; to interpret the examination request accurately; to understand the functioning and inter-relationship of the various organs; to use methods and techniques which will identify organs appearing on the digital display monitor, or on film, and the various stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the image and/or scan for diagnostic use and to emphasize the! aspects of particular interest to the Physician.

The PSB will review your individual qualifications, education, professional training/internship(s) and professional experience to determine the most appropriate salary and grade based on your individual accomplishments.
