The American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama Foundation (ACLU of Alabama) invites applications for a full-time paralegal for our Immigra! nts' Rights work. This position has been created by a one year grant. While we hope to be able to support the position beyond that time, only one year is assured.
Under the supervision of the Legal Director, the paralegal will be responsible for:
Supporting the ACLU of Alabama's coordinated campaign of litigation, advocacy, and public education to fight back against anti-immigrant state laws and policies.
Providing investigative support in existing and potential cases, e.g. identifying, locating and interviewing potential witnesses and clients; determining whether agencies and local governments are engaging in unlawful practices; finding and obtaining documentary evidence of such behavior.
Conducting internet and other factual research.
Engaging with impacted communities and community leaders, both directly and at public and coalition meetings, in order to inform them about ongoing litigation and maintain awareness of development! s on the ground.
Collaborating closely with our Natio! nal Immigrants' Rights Project ("IRP") and ACLU of Alabama attorneys to ensure that the work is responsive to litigation needs.
Performing other duties as assigned by professional staff.
The ACLU of Alabama is a private, non-profit, non-partisan organization that promotes human rights, civil rights, and civil liberties through integrated legal, legislative, field, and public education initiatives throughout Alabama. It is over 1500 members strong and is poised for growth and expansion.
Experience and Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or least one year of paralegal work or related experience.
A commitment to diversity; a personal approach that values the individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability and socio-economic circumstance.
Commitment to civil liberties, immigrants' rights and public interest legal work is essential.
Familiarity with Alabama's! immigrant communities, advocates, and/or organizations strongly preferred.
Excellent research, writing and proof-reading skills.
Must be self-starter, highly organized, detail-oriented with strong interpersonal skills and willing to work in a fast-paced environment.
Strong computer skills with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat. Experience with internet based legal research.
Flexibility to work beyond the regular work week as needed.
Demonstrated ability to coordinate numerous concurrent projects and work under deadlines.
Ability to adapt quickly to changing organizational priorities and manage a high volume of work.
Fluency in Spanish and English required.
Valid driver's license, auto insurance, personal vehicle and a willingness to travel around the state is required.
Superb organization skills with strong follow-through and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
