Must obtain certification of substance abuse (SA) case management training by Alabama Department of Mental Healt! h (DMH)
Must maintain valid driver license, be 23 years of age or older, and have proof of current liability insurance.
Knowledge in substance abuse and mental illness specialties, outlined below, to be obtained within six (6) months of employment:
- Knowledge of the nature of addiction and psychiatric disorders
- Knowledge of gender specific issues relative to addiction
- Knowledge of substance abuse treatment principles
- Knowledge of the 12-step support groups such as AA, NA, CA, and other self-help groups for co-occurring disordered adults
- Understand the dynamics of co-dependency of addicted individuals, denial, manipulation and other typical behaviors of these consumers
- Understand the signs and symptoms of active mental illness and has the information and skills to address crisis intervention or intervention needs
- Understand the behavioral, psychological, physical health, and social effects of psyc! hoactive drugs, including alcohol and tobacco, on the consumer! and significant others
- Knowledge of helping strategies for reducing the negative effects of substance abuse dependency and how to tailor strategies and treatment modalities to the consumers’ stages of dependency, change or recovery
- Knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical resources in the treatment of addictive and mental illness diseases
- Knowledge of cultural diversity
- Knowledge of the risk for illnesses among IV drug users such as HIV/AIDS and T.B.
- Basic knowledge of the criminal justice system including court hearings, judges, court referral officers, probation officers, and jail diversion
- Knowledge of HIV/AIDS education, counseling and testing
- Knowledge of behavioral management and crisis intervention
1. Clinical responsibilities.
a. Provide effective clinical evaluation in completing the Human Services Needs Assessment
b. Formulate appropriate Case Plan! s along with the consumer to document each goal/problem and how it will be addressed within one week of completing the HSNA
c. Provide advocacy and referrals to community resources to assist consumers in advancing towards recovery
d. Provide didactic groups designed to teach skills and monitor consumer progress in recovery
e. Provide monitoring services to consumers through home visits and random UDS screening. These outside services will constitute 70% of the Case Manager’s day
f. Provide transportation to consumers when needed
g. Effectively collaborates with team members and other service providers in the delivery of clinical services. Case Manager will meet with Case Manger Supervisor at 8:00 a.m. to schedule case management activities for the day.
h. Assist in evaluating consumers for discharge planning
i. Adheres to professional code of ethics
j. Will utilize the Case Management sign-out sheet
k. Will offer/provide GED tutoring to! consumers who have completed Phase 1
l. Will provide services to c! onsumers whether they are active in group or not
m. Will involve community resources to provide sober, social or educational activities
n. Will model good time management for consumers by being on time for work
o. Will document progress notes in such a way as to reflect the consumer’s treatment goals.
p. Will complete the Case Management enrollment on the same day as the Case Plan
