Position Overview:
The Head of R&D Personalized Medical Devices will lead and drive the R&D activities in the field of personalized medical devices along the whole value chain from the conception to the prototyping for animal and human study with the aim to realize innovative and IP-Protected medical devices, to be handed over to the Evonikâs customers (global and regional OEMs) as complete technology packages including the related regulatory documentation.
Develop and direct tech! nical R&D staff to prioritize and guide various research and d! evelopment projects to completion.
The Head of R&D Personalized Medical Devices will work synergistically to the other departments of the new established innovation center âMedical Devices and technologiesâ contributing to the overall management activities of the center as member of the management team and is considered a senior level consulting within the organization. As such, the Head of R&D Personalized Medical Devices provides technical mentoring across the organization to further develop the technical skill set of the organization.
Collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to identify top doctor/patient needs and translate these into new development initiatives and projects that will yield personalized medical devices with high clinical and quality of life impact. Identification of new or emerging technologies and services that can be adapted to provide new device opportunities.
Representing Evonikâs interests in relationsh! ips and joint development efforts with academic and industrial partners who can provide technology and know-how that will help realizing advanced personalized medical devices. Assisting in negotiating and structuring joint development or license agreements with chosen partners.
Principal Accountabilities:
Provide leadership, direction, and technical guidance to establish and drive R&D projects in the area of responsibility.
Determines projects resource requirements, schedules and capital expenditures to develop detailed projects and program plans.
Manages cross-functional engineering, chemist and material scientist teams; coordinates all project activities to drive projects from initial to completion in the field of personalized medical devices.
Develops device requirements and technical specifications.
Utilizes Additive Manufacturing technologies to produce device prototypes.
Performs development programs and projects risk analysis, ! identifies risk areas and develops alternate mitigation measures.
A! ct as innovation manager for specific BUâs projects and interface with external customers and service providers. Interact across business and technical functions at various levels throughout the company.
Perform a preliminary technical and business assessment of technology platforms to determine strategic fits.
Participate in ideation and incubation processes that further our innovation capability in the Medical devices and technologies field.
Work closely with IP attorneys in securing the rights of the technologies, applications and devices under development.
Direct external academic and/or industry partnerships such as Small & Medium enterprises (SMEs), Start-up companies and respective negotiations for establishing joint co-operations to exploit technical expertise to ensure and accelerate product development.
Evaluate, collect, and analyze data regarding scientific trends and processes in the specific MedTech fields to identify opportunities for Ev! onik.
Identify and implement industry best practices in product development (in CAD, Rapid Prototyping, additive manufacturing, redesign and reengineering, model making and prototyping).
Ensure compliance with internal operation policies by reviewing and modifying procedures and maintaining a culture of quality.
Supervise, direct and evaluate employees in their job performance.
Promote and require all staff to work safely at all times by consistently following safe work procedures for each position, as well as all safety procedures required at the work site. Require prompt reporting of all incidents and safety issues to one's supervisor. Adhere to all safety requirements.
Candidate Qualifications and Experience:
Advanced technical degree (Masters or Doctorate) in Material Science, Engineering or Chemistry, preferred, 7-10 years of experience in directing R&D projects and/or manufacturing of Medical Devices in an FDA-regulated environment.!
Experience leading R&D and/or manufacturing in a rapid growth envi! ronment including materials management, and facility maintenance.
Manufacturing/Fabrication technology experience.
Experience with laser sintering and additive manufacturing strongly preferred.
CAD, Rapid Prototyping and advanced manufacturing methods experience.
Knowledge in design of experiments and statistical analysis.
Able to read technical drawings and analyze complex problems.
Fluent with Microsoft Office package including, Visio and Project.
Understanding of new emerging technologies and trends.
Excellent time management and project management skills.
Knowledge of tools to evaluate ideas.
Solid hands on experience in Additive Manufacturing with complex devices including troubleshooting issues and implementing corrective and/or preventative actions.
Experience with functional characterization and quality control of implants and medical devices.
Knowledge of Medical Devices regulations and preparation of MAF and Dossiers! for clearance.
Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate clearly and influence staff at all levels, to ensure all staff understand and respond to the requirements of the company.
Excellent skills in negotiation, communication and analysis.
Proven track record in building relationships internally and externally and in interacting with senior management.
Demonstrated ability to self-direct and flex between a variety of approaches, and dealing with ambiguity.
Proven ability to operate in and coordinate cross-functional teams in completing impactful, time-sensitive projects.
Solid knowledge of MedTech landscape within the Americas.
Ability to represent Evonik to scientific world at a global level.
Self-starter and ability to work in a team atmosphere.
