The Requirements To be a strong fit for the Photographer / Videographer role you should have:
A bachelorâs degree in Visual Communication, Journalism, Graphic Design, Multimedia Design, Art Graphic Design, Web Design, or a related field
A minimum of 3 years of recent experience in sports and news photography
Experience in posting to the web and meta-data tagging
Strong web, video, and multimedia authoring skills and emerging technologies
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Flash, Bridge, Acrobat, and audio and video editing software
Experience building, maintaining and engaging an active audience
Demonstrated reporting, writing and organizational skills
Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
Knowledge of press and other forms of print media
Understanding of the methods and tools used to deliver content across a variety of platforms such as Moveable Type CMS, SCC Budgeting and Archiving System, and smartphones
An understanding of the imperatives of multiple platforms â" print, mobile, Internet, etc.
Mastery of social media and digital interaction
A deep background and understanding of the local culture

The Role Reporting to the Managing Producer, you will work the University of Alabama athletics and Tuscaloosa beat. You'll know what's happening in Crimson Tide sports each day, have knowledge of the local communities, and be able to identify and cover stories of interest to our readers. At a high-level, it will be your mission cover all pertinent University of Alabama athletic events, local news and provide journalistically and ethically sound photos, videos and other image-based content, supported by taglines, captions and/or fully developed stories. Regardless of medium, your output should be visually compelling and meet professional standards for composition, focus, lighting and other technical standards. Likewise, your stories should be balanced and factual; timely and topical; and, well-sourced and contextually correct.
You will be responsible for:
Performing fundamental editing functions to facilitate production demands, including cropping, toning, color-correcting, etc.
Working seamlessly across all topics and, when necessary, all departments in the news organization
Working independently and remotely, while maintaining operational communication with Managing Producer
Using hardware, software and cloud-based equipment and systems for direct-to-web production and engagement, including but not limited to:
Uploading photographs, photo galleries and short video to any internal production system
Posting photographs, photo galleries and short video directly to the web
Using a laptop and smart phone for remote web reporting
Interacting on social media platforms, promoting your topic and the news organizationâs content initiatives
Understanding our news organizationâs audience traffic tracking systems and analytical reports
Learn and employ all techniques for effective digital âbeat-bloggingâ and reporting across all platforms
Frequently and incrementally post throughout the day
Engage in story aggregation and topical link-posting
Monitor and engage in reader comment streams; elevate comments into new posts when appropriate
Interact on social media platforms via story shares, objective commentary, topic promotion and the Alabama Media Groupâs content initiatives.
Effectively employ various means of monitoring audience interest and competitorsâ posting on your topic, including setting up Google alerts, Twitter and RSS feeds.
Proactively generating your own story ideas
Receive and fulfill assignments as requested
Because this is an instant world, you must be quick on your feet and strong with photo-editing, grammar and story-editing. Youâll also need to be highly ethical because you donât want to put anything out there that isnât true. You will have a editor or the Managing Producer to talk to and collaborate with as necessary, but you will be field-based, without a desk or office, so being independent is key.
