The Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit legal and educational organization, seeks an experienced attorney to lead our LGBT l! itigation and advocacy throughout the Deep South.
The Law Center was founded in 1971. Its mission is the advancement and protection of the rights of minorities, the poor, and victims of injustice in significant civil rights and social justice matters. Our recent work on behalf of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community includes impact litigation seeking fair treatment of same-sex relationships; seeking safe and equal learning environments for LGBT students; and challenging the dangerous and ineffective practice of "conversion therapy." Our focus is on the South, but our work includes several strategic national campaigns seeking justice for LGBT people. In addition to LGBT rights, the Deputy Legal Director will be expected to continue exploring emerging civil rights and economic issues that affect minorities and the poor in the South.
The Deputy Legal Director will be expected to offer a strong strategic vision of the work, work collaborativel! y with our staff; manage SPLC's LGBT and emerging issues litig! ation and policy docket; and serve as the public face of the project. The Deputy Legal Director will help the project develop multifaceted campaigns--which may include complex federal court litigation, policy work, community organizing, and communications efforts--to achieve our strategic goals. Substantial travel will be required. Applicants should have a strong commitment to advancing the rights of LGBT people, excellent writing skills, and at least ten years' experience of relevant litigation and/or policy advocacy.
Ideally, this position will be based in our central office in Montgomery, Alabama, but we will consider having the right person work in Atlanta. SPLC will pay reasonable relocation costs. We offer compensation that is quite competitive for public interest jobs, depending upon experience, and excellent benefits.
