Butler Snow LLP is accepting applications for a Legal Medical Consultant to assist in the defense of cases in all aspects that involve medical information. The position may be located in our Birmingham, AL, Memphis, TN, Ridgeland, MS, New York City, NY, New Orleans, LA, or Nashville, TN office. The position reports directly to the Pharmaceutical Practice Group Leader with ultimate supervision by the Paralegal and Project Manager.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The Legal Medical Consultant shall be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Participate in client interviews

  • Identify, organize and analyze pertinent medical records

  • Prepare a chronology, timeline or other summaries of documentation in medical records

  • Conduct medical literature searches and assist in other research

  • Identify applicable standards of care in medical malpractice cases

  • Identify, screen and facilitate review by expert witnesses

  • Evaluate case strengths and weaknesses

  • Draft or analyze medical portions of legal documents

  • Evaluate causation and damages issues

  • Educate attorneys and clients regarding relevant medical issues

  • Identify plaintiff's future medical needs and associated costs

  • Participate in case management and case strategy discussions

  • Attend independent medical exams

  • Serve as a nurse expert witness

  • Perform cost of care estimates for long-term care treatment and catastrophic case management scenarios

  • Locate or prepare demonstrative evidence for trial

  • Assist with preparation for and support during deposition, trial or ADR

Skills Required
  • Must have excellent organizational skills and ability to work in a fast paced environment.

  • Excellent communications skills both written and verbal for interface with attorneys

and co-workers.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical treatment, and disease process.

  • Must have extensive clinical experience, which includes interpretation of medical records and medical literature.

  • Management experience including management of processes, procedures, and people.

  • Attention to detail and ability to meet multiple deadlines simultaneously required.

  • Must be able to work in a team environment.

  • Excellent computer skills a must including: Microsoft Office Suite with excellent Excel skills required.

Qualifications
  • 4-year college or equivalent degree with other specialized degree in the medical field or 3-5 years of medical research experience in lieu of degree.

  • A minimum of 3-5 years as a Legal Nurse Consultant, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, or Registered Nurse.

  • Paralegal or research experience preferred.
